Diary entries (April 1916-July 1918) and pages from a second diary (Jan.-Dec. 1918) written by Charles Olson, a Madison, Wis. native, pertaining to his World War I Army service as a corporal with Company G, 127th Infantry, 32nd Division. Olson's diary entries list events, sights seen, and camps stationed at while stateside. Entries also include his voyage to Europe and his troop's movements in France, a list of slang phrases, a list of soldiers by rank who died or were wounded in action, Wig-Wag diagrams and general service code translations, and names and addresses of friends and family back home. Olson, who saw action in France, writes about leaving Chateau-Thierry for the front and being wounded in battle (July 30, 1918). The diary also includes an original poem written by Olson.
